On Wednesday we will begin the 1961 Pulitzer Prize winning novel To Kill A Mockingbird! To be honest, teaching this book scares me; it has been a while since I studied it, and it is deep. However, that said, studying literature in class with everyone has been one of the the most rewarding parts of my student teaching experience, so I am not worried. There is something very educational about reading a book out loud, questioning and discussing it in a group setting. In order to do so, let’s prepare ourselves to take the journey to Depression Era Maycomb, Alabama. A world that begs us to ask the questions: What factors influence our moral growth? What kinds of experiences help us learn how to judge right from wrong?
As for the rest of Language Arts, we will continue on with new vocabulary in Wordly Wise: Unit 11. “Words, words, words,” They are the best!
In Writing, students are working on writing news articles using the 5 w's and an h. Articles may appear in the Coonley Chronicle. On Tuesday, students will participate in a Kahoot quiz on journalism terms. We have finished Checkology. I think the students enjoyed the interactive nature of these models as well as it's focus on 1st Amendment rights, bias and understanding how we use/consume media.
In Social Studies, we will present our History Fair projects and receive feedback in anticipation of Friday's Coonley History Fair. Parents are welcome to view projects beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the MPR room. We will be finishing up our unit on the Progressive Era looking at the reforms and changes it brought about.
