ELA
We have finished our unit on Heroes and students completed a final literary essay focused on "What It Means to Be a Hero?". We are beginning our novel units (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Room 316 and science fiction novels in Room 311 - Nyxia, Across the Universe and City of Embers). Students will be reading and annotating the text on a daily basis. Reading calendars are available on the Homework Page as well as Google Classroom for students.
Writing
Students are focusing on writing a memoir based on Chicagoan, Lorraine Hansberry's classic "To Be Young, Gifted and Black". The memoir explores childhood memories, family connections, and ultimately why it is important to examine our own lives. Next week, students will work on Gum Lessons 77-81.
Civics
This week, students will have the opportunity to meet virtually with Alderman Matt Martin to learn about his role in our city government, how they can get involved as civic actors, as well as have an opportunity for Q&A. We will continue our first Civics Unit looking at the CPS Student Bill of Rights, what is necessary to create a safe learning environment, and create classroom agreements that will support this kind of work. Students will learn about this year's History Fair theme, Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.
