Academics
ELA - Students explored nine different suspense/thriller stories within their small groups. They looked at how/where/and to what effect the elements of suspense/thriller played out in their texts (Sound of Thunder, The Landlady, Open Window, Girl at the Window, Bubblebath No.3, Sucker, The Possibility of Evil, The Lottery, The Monkey's Paw). Next week, students will be working in their groups to complete an I-Movie trailer highlighting the elements of suspense within their text. At the end of the week, we will begin our science fiction text set (Across the Universe by Beth Revis or Nyxia by Scott Reintgen).
Writing - Students are making progress on writing their high school essays. Students should have completed their body paragraphs and be ready for introductions and conclusions next week. Essays are due on Tuesday..
Civics - This week students looked at the Limits on Student Speech within schools. They dug deep looking at the recent Supreme Court ruling in Mahoney Area School District v B.L., which looked at whether schools can punish students for off-campus speech. Students created a claim, found evidence, developed a counterclaim and reached final conclusions for this case.
