ELA
This week, students will read "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" by Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as "We Wear a Mask" by Paul Dunbar and analyze the letter and poem. We will continue our reading of Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, which is giving us an opportunity to expand our understanding of comics and graphic novels in this non-fiction narrative. Students will work on Wordly Wise Lesson 9 this week.
Writing
I will meet with students in project groups (exhibits, websites, documentaries) throughout the week to review the requirements for each project type. Chicago Metro History Fair and National History Day are offering a range of opportunities to work with reference librarians, special collections, and professors to get help with their projects. Both websites offer videos and other great resources that are free for students to use to help in developing their projects. I will send a letter out shortly that will share some great resources and online classes that students can attend to receive extra help researching and creating projects.
Civics
We are working on Unit 3 of 4 of the new Civics curriculum which delves into power, policies and change within communities. Students will explore specific case studies this week and look at how communities can create change and the unintended consequences of policy.
