The Alderman shared his work and participated in a Q&A with students focusing on how students can take "Big and Bold" action. Andi shared information on the Ward's Youth Council and ways students can get involved within the community. We celebrated our Classroom Olympic winners who placed Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for our egg relay, Olympic trivia quiz and creative choreography challenges.
Homeroom/Advisory - We began and will continue to explore our new SEL program, the 7 Mindsets on Monday/Tuesdays. Students will continue to focus on Unit 3: We Are Connected this month with lessons focused on: Embracing Everyone, Maximizing Positive Relationships, Building Your Dream Team, and Leading with Value. We had our first discussion of Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson as our Equity Read Aloud on Wednesdays. Thursdays - students had time for Free Reading. On Friday, we explored how G-Suite (Google Suite tools) can help us to organize our email with labels, drive with folders, and use the calendar and tasks apps to follow and track work.
ELA - This week, students will explore Satire techniques and examples through an Onion Article, "Underfunded Schools Forced to Cut Past Tense from Language Programs", and video examples in Shrek. In preparation for the essay embedded assessment, students will work collaboratively to brainstorm and plan an essay to explain how an author creates humor for effect and uses it to communicate a universal truth. We will explore active/passive tense as well as frequently confused words. Students will view humor in poetry through "Moses" by Ted Hughes and finish the week exploring the elements of drama in preparation for our study of 12th Night by Shakespeare.
Civics/Social Science - Students will finish up Launch 0 this week by completing their identity portraits and Visual Timeline Unit Assessment. We will begin Launch 1 delving into our Rights and Responsibilities as Citizens.
