Academics
Advisory/SEL - On Tuesday, our middle school will be screening The Social Dilemma, a documentary that focuses on the use/misuse of algorithms to track our online behaviors as well as the influence Social Media plays in our lives and ways to manage its use in healthy ways. We have been enjoying our read aloud, Rainbow Revolutionaries by Sarah Prager. Students have been completing additional research on these important pioneers and sharing with the class.
ELA - We have started our next text, a memoir - Night by Elie Wiesel. It chronicles his life during the Holocaust. We will be looking at the following essential questions as we read and analyze the text: How do you keep hope alive when your rights are taken from you? What does it mean to be a minority and how does this impact our identity? How would living through a war change your childhood? Students will track new vocabulary and complete discussion questions as we read.
Writing - History Fair Projects should be almost complete as we have devoted a significant amount of time this week and will be due 2/9/22. We will be working on short process papers on Monday and Tuesday. Students will be self-evaluating using the judging rubrics and the Coonley Virtual History Fair will be judged by Amundsen and Lakeview History students and their teachers the week of 2/14-2/18/22. At the end of the week, we will be starting our poetry unit and students will be writing in 6 different styles (odes, ekphrasis, non-sense poetry, sonnets, sestinas, and free choice).
Civics - We are completing History Fair projects this week (see above) and will be back to our Unit 2 in Civics exploring Federalism. Students will also analyze an argument in Upfront magazine on Friday.
