Next week we will begin reading A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. As an actor, plays are my favorite, and I am very excited to get to know this one better with the students. It is a classic story from the late 1950’s, won awards at the time it was written/produced, was made into a movie and resides in the canon of great American plays next to the likes of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and Eugene O'Neill's A Long Day's Journey Into Night. It may be a coincidence, but I think it is apropos (Wordly Wise word!) we get to read it during Black History Month.
In writing we begin a unit on Journalism! Asking questions such as: What is Journalism, what is and why is there “Fake news”? How can news be made non partisan/objective/balanced and unbiased, what are the elements of the news and lastly, why is news important? We will also move back to Grammar and begin to take a look at verbals, active voice and passive voice, analyzing phrases and clauses and choosing proper sentence structure.
So what do we have? Just another great week!
