8th Grade Announcements & Information
Progress Reports were sent home on Friday as well as Star Reading/Math Scores. Please review the document attachment below in looking at the scores and feel free to reach out with any questions. We will also be preparing students for the annual IAR assessments with a review of sample test items to familiarize them with the testing platform and what to expect this month.
Homeroom/Advisory -
During Advisory this month, we are beginning Unit 2 of the 7 Mindsets Program: Passion First. We will work on lesson 2.2 Explore your Interests.
ELA - We are working in literature circles exploring memoirs, poetry, interview, novel excerpts and short articles for Unit 3: The Challenge to Make a Difference. Students will be delving deeply into their groups selected text through multiple readings, discussion and analyze. They will share their texts with the class this week. Students will be working on Springboard Activities 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5 this week as they analyze their literature circle texts, "Then They Came for the Communists" a poem, and Eve Bunting's Terrible Things, an allegory.
Writing - Students will be introduced to narrative poems. They will focus on the writer's craft of point of view, description and theme to develop a narrative that shares their literature circle text. Narrative poems are due on Friday, 2/17/23. We will continue to work with Quill, our grammar program on a daily basis.
Civics/Social Science - Students are continuing to draft and develop their project proposals for a Civic Action Project with a focus on making a change/impact within their community. Students will explore create mock school power murals in small groups this week and look at a message they want to communicate and how they can share that message through a mural. They will present their murals in class and complete research of a non-for-profit community organization to create a mini-directory of Chicago/neighborhood organizations.
