Homeroom/Advisory -
During Advisory this month, we are beginning Unit 6: Live to Give and starting with 6.1 - Stretch Yourself. Students are enjoying our equity read aloud Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet. Next week, they will read two folktales that are related to the text. A BIG THANK YOU to Coonley parents, Elizabeth Niemczyk Costume Designer, Matty May Vice President of Sales, Simon Richards CEO (Professional Chemical Engineer) and Mitzi Baum Chief Executive Officer of Non-profit for sharing their careers and time. The students loved Career Day so thank you to Ms. Smith and the Social Science Committee for planning. Next week on Thursday (3/16/23), we will view the film, Just Mercy, as the culminating activity for our equity read aloud. Students may wear PJs and bring a healthy snack for our film party in the afternoon. Note - Report Card Pick up is on 3/29/23. A conference sign-up will be sent to all 8th grade parents next week. Be on the look-out for a field trip permission slip for the Museum of Science and Industry coming your way.
ELA - We will continue our novel study of Elie Wiesel's memoir, Night, this coming week. Students will also be taking the 90 minute Illinois Assessment of Readiness Reading Units on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. All students should be free reading daily and taking AR quizzes toward their 2nd semester goal. Students will have an opportunity to free read when they complete their testing.
Writing - Students are continuing to draft their Young Author's manuscripts due on March 24, 2023. They are working in genre groups and should have at least a page written at this point. Students are continuing to complete their personalized Grammar Quill activities and assignments this month.
Civics/Social Science - We are continuing our study of the Burge Reparations Won Curriculum which explores fundamental human rights and the abuse of power by Detective Jon Burge. This week, we explored the victims stories and the response of the community (including the survivors, lawyers and the African American Community).
Have a wonderful week-end.
