Last week was busy! We transitioned out of A Raisin in the Sun and into To Kill a Mockingbird. This week we will continue on with Mockingbird; we will read it aloud in class, investigate the setting and the way Harper Lee uses figurative language to describe Maycomb, Alabama, talk about the slang used to create realistic characters, and finally, finish Part 1 of the book by creating storyboards that summarize the main events in the text.
After spending the last two weeks on Wordly Wise (a welcome change of focus for all of us), we will move back to GUM this week and begin Unit 3.
In writing, our Newspaper articles are due on Monday the 9th. We will share these articles with each other and choose a few to read out loud in class. This past week you all filled out a survey about Young Authors; can you guess what that means? That is right, we get to delve into our imaginations and unleash the plethora of stories running through our heads with a new unit in writing focused on all things pertaining to Creative Writing.
Let’s stay on top of our reading (use the Mockingbird calendar to track where you need to be for class) and in your downtime begin brainstorming ideas for the Young Author’s project.
Congratulations to students on all the great History Fair projects. Your expertise and research was evident in your presentations. We will finish up the Progressive Era this week by looking at primary source documents (primarily speeches) from the era. We will review and take the final exam this week.
