We are continuing to read Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson as our Equity Read Aloud on Wednesdays. Thursdays - students had time for Free Reading. On Friday, we checked Google Classroom Submissions to ensure all assignments were submitted, checked Aspen Gradebook for any missing word/assignments or opportunities for retakes, cleaned out binders and desks in preparation for a new seating arrangement.
ELA - This coming week, we will continue our exploration of Humor/Comedy with the poem, "Is Traffic Jam Delectable?" by Jack Prelutsky. We will be exploring wordplay in Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?". We will look back at our previous readings to categorize their use of humorous elements and style as a precursor to writing our Final Essay Analysis of Humor. Students have access to Springboard online which allows them an e-book version to use in class and at home. Students can now access Accelerated Reader where they can take comprehension quizzes for free reading books at school and at home.
Civics/Social Science - Students started Launch 1 this week looking at Rights and Responsibilities. Students explored the VOYCE project led by high schoolers and explored how students worked to create changes in the CPS Discipline Code of Conduct as well as mental health supports and creating safe school environments. This week, we will continue our study looking at our rights under the Constitution with a focus on constitutional principles (limited government, individual rights, republicanism, separation of powers, federalism, popular sovereignty, checks and balances). We'll dig deeper looking at the Bill of Rights and Voting Rights as well as the First Amendment. We will also explore memorials for 911 and Queen Elizabeth II, with a focus on remembering their impacts on the World.
