Academics
Advisory/SEL - We completed our Rainbow Revolutionaries reading/research this month as well as 2nd Step lesson. Students wanted to look at Women Breaking Barriers for our next advisory unit.
ELA - We are well into our Young Adult Book Clubs this week for Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, Speak by Laurie Anderson Halse, The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. A reading calendar and discussion assignments are posted in Chicago Reading Framework Google Classroom. Students are leading discussions and doing a great job at facilitating conversations about these texts. So proud of their work.
Writing - We are well into our News Literacy and Journalism Writing Units. Students are working in online modules in Checkology through the News Literacy Project. It will be important for students to bring headphones or ear buds to use with this program as it is self-paced and includes excellent audio and media integration. We enjoyed our newspaper scavenger hunt on Friday. Thank you for all the papers. Who knew there was so much information?
Civics - Thank you to Principal Humphrey and Assistant Principal McLinden for their time and thoughtful responses to student's questions about the power and influence of schools in our community during our Google Meet with the entire 8th grade. Students are working on group mural project interpreting symbols and images that represent school power. Students will begin a research project on community organizations in our city and neighborhood.
