Thank you to our parent chaperones for our field trip to the Illinois Holocaust Museum. We had terrific docents who led us through the Karkomi Holocaust Exhibition. The docents were impressed by our students thoughtful questions and engagement.
I hope everyone had an enjoyable Break with time to refill your buckets with family, friends and fun. Hard to believe we are in the last 9 weeks of the year. Looking forward to a great 4th quarter with all that 8th grade has to offer - Reality Fair, Class Trip, Luncheon and Graduation preparations. We have another field trip in the works as well.

Academics
Advisory/SEL - Students are starting to look at Women Breaking Barriers for our next advisory unit.
ELA - We are half way through our Young Adult Book Clubs this week for Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, Speak by Laurie Anderson Halse, The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. A reading calendar and discussion assignments are posted in Chicago Reading Framework Google Classroom. Students are leading discussions and doing a great job at facilitating conversations about these texts. So proud of their work.
Writing - We are well into our News Literacy and Journalism Writing Units. Students are working in online modules in Checkology through the News Literacy Project. It will be important for students to bring headphones or ear buds to use with this program as it is self-paced and includes excellent audio and media integration. This week, students will begin brainstorming and drafting articles that may be presented in the Coonley Chronicle.
Civics - Students will continue a research project on community organizations in our city and neighborhood. They will also focus on a civics action project to address a problem that they feel strongly about. Students will have the choice to create a Public Service Announcement or a Poster to bring awareness to their issue.
