ELA
This week, students continue their Young Adult Book Club novel exploration. Students are working in small groups to read, analyze and discuss their texts. Students continue to explore the questions: How does our identity impact our choices and how people view us? What does justice/forgiveness look like for those who have harmed us? For Understanding the Invisible Art of Comics additional focus on: Why does POV matter and how is this present in graphic novels through text and images?
Writing
Students will continue to complete their individualized Quill Grammar Activities as well as the NewsLiteracy Projects Checkology modules which focus on the rights and responsibilities of the press as a watchdog for democracy. They will test their abilities to question the media they consume and learn tips/tricks to use and consume it responsibly. Students will begin writing news articles on a topic of their choice using a funnel model due 5/19/23.
Social Science
We are continuing Unit 2: Dividing a Nation: Segregation and its Consequences in Facing History's Choices in Little Rock Curriculum. Students will engage with a range of texts/images focused on the Little Rock Nine students and their experiences. We will also be preparing for an 8th Grade Tradition - the Model UN. Students will be assigned to a country group (across all 5 8th grade classrooms). Within these groups and other UN working groups, they will serve as a delegate to research and learn about the UN, prepare country introductions, research an issue & create with resolutions to support their country's pov on a global issue (eradication of poverty, globalization, gender equity in STEM fields, the plight of refugees and climate change). The experience involves negotiation, problem-solving, research and writing. We will spend the day at Sulzer Library in our Model UN Simulation and hope to offer a lunch option for students to enjoy in Welles Park during our lunch break.
