St. Louis Updates: Departure Union Station @ 6:15 AM SHARP on Thursday, 5/11/23. You may want to plan a carpool. Teachers/Chaperones will be on the curb to assist students so you can just drop off. Pick-up @ 11:00 PM on Friday, 5/12/23 @ Union Station. Itineraries and Class of 2023 t-shirts were sent home today. Please have students wear Class Shirt on 5/11 and Coonley Gear on 5/12. Our great room reps are coordinating breakfast bars/snacks for the train ride so don't worry if your student doesn't get a bite to eat, we will pass out the treats on the train.
Thank You's: Many thanks to our wonderful parent chaperones (Ms. Gould & Ms. Putnam). We had a wonderful Model UN at Sulzer Library and have some incredible action plans to address global issues. The students enjoyed collaborating, creating their Model UN resolutions, our lunch/recess time in Welles Park and the beautiful weather. A big thank-you to Sulzer Library for hosting our event.
Congratulations to the Guys and Dolls Cast and Crew! What an amazing show with incredible performances, featuring many talented 8th graders!! So proud of their hard work and inspired performances.
The Home Stretch: We are almost there. We have had a couple of jam packed weeks and will continue right up till graduation.
ELA
This week, students be finishing their Young Adult Book Club novel exploration. Students are working in small groups to read, analyze and discuss their texts. Students continue to explore the questions: How does our identity impact our choices and how people view us? What does justice/forgiveness look like for those who have harmed us? For Understanding the Invisible Art of Comics additional focus on: Why does POV matter and how is this present in graphic novels through text and images?
Writing
Students will continue to complete their individualized Quill Grammar Activities as well as the NewsLiteracy Projects Checkology modules which focus on the rights and responsibilities of the press as a watchdog for democracy. They will test their abilities to question the media they consume and learn tips/tricks to use and consume it responsibly. Students are drafting news articles on a topic of their choice using a funnel model due 5/10/23. Coming up - Students will have an opportunity to write a commencement speech, a letter to the Class of 2024 with advice, and a final reflection and selection of writing pieces to complete their Coonley Writing Portfolios.
Social Science
We are nearing the end of Unit 3 in Facing History's Choices in Little Rock Curriculum. Students will engage with a range of texts/images focused on the Little Rock Nine students and their experiences.
